White's personal information, including his Social Security number, cellphone number and address, was published online just moments after the exchange, in which he defended his company's support of the controversial -- and now-shelved -- Stop Online Piracy Act.
Careful what you wish for Dana.
I'm no fan of SOPA, but does this really help or hurt those who are opposed to it as well?
Things like this really make me unhappy with what people can do with computers. I strongly disagree with Anonymous all together and support Dana White's claims that computer piracy is wrong. Any group that can willingly get information from your computer at any time is dangerous and makes me distrust keeping many things on my computer for fear of it being taken and used against me such as my bank account information or passwords to a wide variety of accounts some of which have information on my family.
ReplyDeleteI believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion and despite White's comments to Anonymous, there is never an acceptable reason to display someones personal information through the internet, nor is it right for people to download films or music illegally. It is very frightening to think that your personal information is so easily accessible to people just like Anonymous and I might just support White's statement that these people are pretty close to being terrorists.
ReplyDeleteIf anything, what Anonymous did makes me want to side with Dana White. Just because you can doesn't mean you should and releasing personal information like that does nothing to solve the problem. White was simply voicing his opinion that he believes online piracy is wrong and that his company is losing revenue as a result of it. In my opinion, he has a right to be angry about it. Anonymous is also entitled to his opinions, but not to messing with White's personal information. Whether he asked for it or not, I don't believe it was the right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteI disagree but first I feel the need to explain what SOPA is to make my position clear.
ReplyDeleteSOPA (and its cousin PIPA) are in theory great bills that will help protect copyrighted material. However if you go into depth on what the bills state, their purpose becomes less clear and far more dangerous. The internet has this amazing idea called "Safe Haven" provided by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Basically it says that a website host is not responsible for what its users post. Whether it happens to be copyrighted or not, it falls on the poster if there are any legal actions that could be taken. This protects websites like mega-upload and video-share websites since their not the ones actually doing the uploading. But this also protects websites I'm sure your fans of, such as youtube, facebook, twitter, tumbler, Wikipedia and any site that allows visitors to post ANYTHING. What the bill will do is hold them responsible for everything on the site, including forum posts. If anything is even SUSPECTED of being copyrighted, the government can completely shut down the website. All you need to do is go to a judge and say a site “might be” infringing on your rights and the site is immediately blocked or loses all its advertisements.
This in just plan evil. It is a fascist bill funded by music and movie fat-cats trying to protect there out of date revenue models. It needed to be stopped. Not only that but these people need to be shown that we will not stand for this blatant misuse of power. This is a day and age where pickets and boycotts are fast becoming ineffective. Instead of rioting in the street and burning police cars, it requires directed attacks at the creators and supporters of there bills. There is a war going on between the freedom of speech and information verses government and corporation control. Dana White choose a side and he paid for it but that's what happens in battle. Don't think government control could happen?

This could be our future if we don't take an active stand against bills like these.

Having the ability to steal Dana's information does not mean that that person should have done it. Whether he meant to prove a point or did it for the fun of it does not make it right. It is scary knowing that such information can be easily accessed but in the end such information could have been taken in many other ways!
ReplyDeleteIt is unbelievable what people are able to do with computers these days. being able to acces his personal information like that should not be that simple and it is just unethical to have released White's personal information even though he was easily able to.
ReplyDeleteI don't feel that the hackers had the right to steal White's information. He's against piracy and these hackers seemed to have taken it too personally. What these hackers are doing is illegal but they're getting all defensive when someone calls them out on it.
ReplyDeleteSadly, it will to be made out to hurt those opposed to SOPA by our culture and media blowing things out of proportion. However, hackers will always be hackers. The only thing initiating a centralized government control will do is cause the offenses to reach a larger scale. What happens when criminals/enemies figure out how to get in to the system doing the regulation? It's absurd to say that the passing of these kind of bills will end piracy and identity theft. However, on the bright side at least those opposed have a weapon called the "invisible hand". Fortunately, the stronger the hackers get the stronger the security gets. Anti-virus and identity protection software are most definitely going to benefit from these instances. The free-market will find a solution!
ReplyDeleteBut still, why would anyone mess with Dana White!? Out of all people, his friends are the last ones I would want to see at my door to discuss my questionable web activity...
I feel like this only added another reason to support SOPA. It is a good idea in theory and if I were a business owner that may be compromised by hackers I would fully support it. Anonymous seems to love showing off their skills at hacking and mostly makes personal attacks on individuals rather than spending their time on some more important things they could be doing. I feel bad for the guy.
ReplyDeleteI don't support SOPA in may aspects; but the fact that anyone can get hacked at any given moment makes me believe that they should modify some of it. Like Dana said don't steal my sh--. Which I agree with, ASU just got hacked and it had a catastrophic outcome. Who knows what happend with all the information obtained and even better who knows if the person can't do it again. I feel that this article hurts those opposed to SOPA because it proves the point that this type of thing isn't something that just happens every once in a while. Social security numbers are not something that is to be taken lightly if in the wrong hands.
ReplyDeleteI'm shocked that there are people in the puclic sector that actually support SOPA. I can only hope that they haven't read the bill in it's entirety and don't fully undestand its true impact.
ReplyDeleteDana White is one dumb son of a b!tch. You don't go up toe-to-toe with an invisible entity that can shut down your life. He needs to stop being a meat-head and go back to promoting fights. That said, he has a point that online piracy can siphon money from his fighters when videos and games are pirated, but honestly it isn't that much money when look at how much a fighter gets paid per fight and then you look at the royalties from the fights re-runs.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous took it way too far with putting all of White's personal information on twitter. I do agree that hackers and piracy are becoming a huge problem in America and need to be addressed, but I also believe that people need to make their own websites more secure so that these hackers have more trouble trying to hack them.
ReplyDeleteIt is really unforunate that this happened to her and the lack of privacy and the damage that could have taken place as a result of, but she probably could have been better protected from this time of invation, it happenes all the time it just happened to be you.
ReplyDeleteThe privacy is very important to people. And it's unfortunately that this happened to him. But I think it will be better in future.
ReplyDeleteI can understand Dana White and his company not wanting their fights made available online illegally. He loses a lot of money. And I agree that stealing is stealing, but I am in no way in favor of the government taking control of the Internet. However, the way Anonymous went about their protest I think was inappropriate and unnecessary. White's personal information should have remained private.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous has acted very immature. that is just somebody that dosnt have anything to do but do stuff like that. Stealing from the internet is not different than stealing from a store. do you see people walking into target and grabbing the movies they want and just walking out? no. that is because the police will be involved. if the person who is Anonymous is ever found it should be jail time. I agree with SOPA and my position is it hurts those who are opposed to it because they are mad that they can't steal anymore.
ReplyDeleteThat is horrible news for poor Dana White! Its daunting but at the same time highly impressive when we realize how capable computers are of doing nearly anything. Maybe Dana ticked off a computer nerd and now hes paying the price. I wonder what will have to take place in order for White's info to be reset?
ReplyDeleteMy torrent downloads aren't even downloading right now. I'm assuming the SOPA has something to do with it. This sucks, I know I can speak for a lot of people that our search for new music has just been aliened.
ReplyDeleteI am NOT in support of SOPA, however I think Anonymous made this fight too personal. Details like White's SSN should not have been posted on the internet. It scares me that this type of information can so easily be accessed. It makes you take a second look at all the personal information on your personal computer.
ReplyDeleteI don't download music, or movies, or anything illegally because when I like something and actually think it is worth my money, I purchase it. But, SOPA goes farther than just pirating music, etc and it is attacking the most free thing people have. Foreign countries seem to be a target because they do not enforce anti piracy as strongly as the U.S. would like. For example, the piracy in China runs rampant (There is a drastic difference in China's total hardware sales, 64.4 billion and their software sales at 5.4 billion) and the U.S. wants to stick their fingers in other people's market. Another example would be the CDroms in Guatemala that contain about 300 songs for only 10$ or so that are just filled with pirated songs and burned onto a disk. It sounds like this is Hollywood counting their lost dollars...
ReplyDeletePeople need to understand and grasp the possible outcomes of putting ANYTHING online. I personally, deactivated my Facebook. Although i know that the information that was on there is technically still there, i feel much safer ( maybe a false sense of security) knowing that my information is not on there.
ReplyDeleteThis kind of stuff makes me feel many different things, first off stealing is wrong but i understanding piracy movies and music are very expensive. On the other hand of people getting into your computer this comes down to be smart don't have illegal stuff or private stuff on your computer.
ReplyDeleteNowadays, I think there is no term of privacy in computer, so I should protect my important materials from the computer! also I should be careful when I deal with this kind of organizations.
ReplyDeleteI personally applaud Anonymous for going after the drug cartels and oppressive governments, but going after Dana White was not right. Everyone has the right to their own opinion even if they are public figures like White. If they had only had words with him to defend what they are doing, that is okay, but publishing his personal information and even his wife's name was not right. Going after the family is never right. If Anonymous wants more people to take them seriously they need to not repeat things like this.
ReplyDeleteEveryone is entitled to their own opinion and despite White's comments to Anonymous, there's no acceptable reason to display someones personal information anywhere. It's scary how easily accessible our personal information is to people, especially like Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteIt is just scary how anyone who has that kind of power and information can exploit others. If thats not taken care of, people who offend the holder of that information will be in big trouble. That's not ethical
ReplyDeleteI believe that this sadly helped SOPA because of someone just putting out private information and if SOPA was in effect they most likely would've filtered that out. But no matter what hackers will be hackers they will find a way to pass this law. That's like telling the world that you have found a way to stop all crime.
ReplyDeleteThis was really bad for Dana White but he was kinda asking for it. He kept taunting them and telling them that he was not scared. He did not think it would happen again, but it did. Unfortunately, this conflict hurt the people that does not support SOPA because it just showed how bad and dangerous the Internet can be without any protection. So now we will see what happens with the bill and hopefully they do not pass it.
ReplyDeleteEveryone needs privacy. It is very unpleasant to people whose been steal the personal imfo by hackers. It is very important to protect ourselves.
ReplyDeleteThe majority of people don't trust a computer in many critical situations because of the spread wide of SOPA. However, most organizations obviously depend in a computing system in all customers' transactions. Therefore, we should check our information in these companies daily.
